Paper Money of the United States: 1896 Two Dollar Silver Certificate from the Educational Series
The Series 1896 Two Dollar Silver Certificate is the second note of the Educational Series, engraved by Charles Schlecht and G.F.C Smillie after designs by Edwin H. Blashfield (figures) and Thomas F. Morris (frame, background).
This note was ranked 11st most beautiful note in the book 100 Greatest American Currency Notes compiled by Bowers and Sundman.
Obverse: Allegory of Science presenting Steam and Electricity to Commerce and Manufacture. (Science (center) presents Steam and Electricity (the two children) to the more mature figures of Commerce (left) and Manufacture (right).) The obligation clause on the obverse reads, "THIS CERTIFIES THAT THERE HAS BEEN DEPOSITED IN THE TREASURY OF THE UNITED STATES TWO SILVER DOLLARS PAYABLE TO THE BEARER ON DEMAND."
Reverse: Busts of inventors Robert Fulton and Samuel F.B. Morse. The portraits are attributed to engraver Lorenzo J. Hatch.

The Third Issue of Silver Certificates, Series 1896, were released in three denominations and are titled the "Educational Series". The $1 note (History Instructing Youth), the $2 note (Science Presents Steam and Electricity to Commerce and Manufacture) and the $5 note (Electricity as the Dominant Force in the World). These notes are very popular with collectors and are usually considered both the Most Historical and Most Artistically designed of all issues of U.S. Paper Money.
