Paper Money of the United States: Two Dollar Silver Certificate, Series of 1899

American collectors refer to these notes as "mini-portholes" because it looks like George Washington is being viewed through the porthole of a ship. This is also the only two dollar bill that George Washington was featured on. The 1899 $2 Silver Certificate also referred to as the “Agricultural Note.”
This note was ranked 67st most beautiful note in the book 100 Greatest American Currency Notes compiled by Bowers and Sundman.

Obverse: Portrait of George Washington inside a small ornate frame (which is why this note is sometimes referred to as the "Mini-Porthole" note) flanked by classically rendered figures of Mechanics and Agriculture, recognizing the prosperity of America at the end of the Victorian era. The obligation clause on the obverse reads, "This Certifies That There Has Been Deposited In The Treasury Of The United States Two Silver Dollars Payable To Bearer On Demand." 1899 silver certificates have blue seals and blue serial numbers.
Reverse: "This Certificate Is Receivable For Customs, Taxes and All Public Dues, And When So Received May Be Reissued."
Signatures: (as depicted) Judson Whitlocke Lyons, Register of the Treasury and Ellis Henry Roberts, Treasurer of the United States.
Predominant colors:
Printer & Engraver: Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C.
