Obverse: The Lamb of God and cross flag on the shield are symbols traditionally associated with St. John the Baptist, patron of the island - Puerto Rico's official emblem. A seated child writing notes is portrayed at right.
Reverse: Spanish Royal Coat of Arms
The bank was created via royal decree on May 5, 1888 and received a charter valid for 25 years. The bank was not actually established until 1890, with the office located in San Juan. Four years later a branch was added in Mayaguez.
