Obverse: The main motif is a portrait in profile of the renowned Chilean poetess Gabriela Mistral located to the right of a vignette that takes up the entire banknote except for part of the left section. She is tenderly watching a group of people at the extreme left, which represents motherly love. The number that corresponds to the location of the banknote in the sheet appears to the left of this group. The poetical name, "GABRIELA MISTRAL", is printed on two lines to the lower right.The number "5000" appears in white and in different sizes and styles on the upper left-hand and lower right-hand corners of the vignette. The words "CINCO MIL PESOS" (five thousand pesos) are printed in bold on two lines in the center of the banknote. The vignette includes Security Strip backgrounds and guilloches.The title "BANCO CENTRAL DE CHILE" appears in bold and vertically outside the vignette on the left side, taking up the whole of the length of the bank note.Underneath the lower edge of the vignette the bank note sometimes carries the imprint "CASA DE MONEDA DE CHILE". Otherwise it remains blank.

Reverse: The main motif of the vignette is a reproduction of the image engraved on the front of the Nobel Literature Prize Gold Medal awarded to Gabriela Mistral in 1945. The caption "PREMIO NOBEL 1945" (1945 Nobel Prize) is printed on three lines to the lower right of the image.The number "5000" appears in white and in different styles and sizes on the top left- and lower right-hand corners. Under the top left-hand corner number the words "CINCO MIL PESOS" (five thousand pesos) appear on two lines in different fonts, sizes and styles.The serial letters followed by 7 (seven) digits are printed in the middle of the left side. Immediately above is the number that corresponds to the location of the banknote in the sheet.The words "PRESIDENTE" (President) and "GERENTE GENERAL" (General Manager) are printed on the bottom left, from left to right, respectively. These titles carry the respective signatures and the date of printing is centered above them.The rest of the vignette is made up of Security Strip ornaments, backgrounds and guilloches.The title "BANCO CENTRAL DE CHILE" appears in bold and vertically outside the vignette on the right side, taking up the whole of the width of the banknote.The serial letters followed by 7 (seven) digits are duplicated on the lower right-hand corner, but in smaller print.

Watermark: Located to the left on the front of the bank note, no printing over it, the watermark consists of a portrait of Gabriela Mistral in profile and facing toward the center of the bank note.

Security Strip: A strip threaded vertically down the left side, on the front of the banknote, while micro printing repeats the words "CINCO MIL " (five thousand) along its entire length.
Colors: Several shades of red, ochre, brown and green.
