Obverse: Portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Capital letter "G". Coat of arms of Gibraltar at right. Dated 1 January 2010. Signature of Dilip Dayaram Tirathdas (as Commissioner of Currency). Windowed security thread with demetalized text on front. One horizontal and one vertical 6-digit serial number (both with nurmerals of ascending size) with fractional prefix.
Reverse: The painting "The Sortie from Gibraltar" by John Trumbull, a scene from the Great Siege of Gibraltar (1779-1783).
The Great Siege of Gibraltar 1779-1783 was an unsuccessful attempt by Spain and France to capture Gibraltar from the British during the American War of Independence. This was the largest action fought during the war in terms of numbers, particularly the Grand Assault of 18 September 1782. At three years and seven months, it is the longest siege endured by the British Armed Forces. The heric defence of Gibraltar under General Eliott against the might of France and Spain resonated throughout Europe. The back of the £10 banknote depicts the valiant General in a scene depicting him directing the defence of Gibraltar.
