By March 2004, the Central bank of the Islamic republic of Iran released the newly published 20000 Rials banknotes. These notes are unique either for its denomination or its design. The note has a dark blue color and like previous issues of other denominations, it has the portrait of Ayatollah Khomeini on obverse side. In the first issues, the portrait seemed non-realistic and didn't resemble photos of Ayatollah. But a  year later, in march 2005, the Central Bank of Iran released a new version of the note with a significant change in the portrait of Ayatollah due to some complains by the Islamic hard-liners who received it as an insult to the founder of the Islamic republic.

Obverse: The portrait of Imam Khomeini at right (The Late Imam Ayatolah Seyyed Ruhollah Khomeini - former political and spiritual leader of the 1979 Iranian Revolution and a Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic); The emblem of the central bank of Iran is printed in the small empty space on the left side. Blue and green on multicolored underprint.
Signatures: Mahmud Bahmani & Seyed Shamseddin Hosseini.
Reverse: Imam Square (Naghsh-e-Jahan) in Isfahan.
On the reverse side is the southern scene of the Naghsh-e Jahaan Square in Isfahan in which the two famous buildings of this complex, the Aali Ghaapoo palace and the Shah's mosque (Now called Imam Khomeini) are shown.

Watermark: Imam Ayatullah Sayyid Ruhollah Mousavi Khomeini. The watermark of this bank note is a new profile of Ayatollah Khomeini that resembles the main portrait of the note.
Original Size: 163 x 78 mm

Paper Specifications:
Watermark: The portrait of Imam Khomeini in the left part of the banknote is embedded in the paste of paper. When the Banknote is held up to the light, the image can be seen from both sides.

Paper: 100% cotton
Invisible Fluorescent Fibers: Fluorescent colored fibers in green, blue, red and yellow embedded in the paste of paper become visible under ultra violet light on the obverse and reverse sides.
